Firestone Industrial Products, based in Indianapolis, has expanded its line of Airomatic polyactuators to include a new 120 mm option. It’s the largest pneumatic polyactuator on the market, according to the company. The line also includes 50 mm and 70 mm versions.
Airomatic polyactuators are constructed of two polyurethane sections welded together to form a tight, tough seal, and have been lab tested for 5-million cycles without product failure or performance degradation. The devices are commonly used to assist in conveyor transfer sections and roller brakes, but they suit many applications requiring low pressure and short strokes. They cost about one-third that of pancake cylinders and require no lubricating grease or oil.
The 120-mm unit can deliver 500 pounds of stroke force. In addition, multiple polyactuators can be “daisy chained” together via tubing, letting them operate as a single unit and deliver even greater force. The product’s compact size also lends flexibility for conveyor designers, as it requires only 0.6 in. (15 mm) clearance. And unlike more-traditional cylinders, there are no pistons, rods or sliding seals to design around.
“By adding a 120 mm polyactuator to our Airomatic line we are expanding the design options available to our customers and filling a void in the industry,” said Mary Kay Bryja, division marketing manager, FSIP. “We’ve developed an exceptional way to pack an incredible amount of force into a tiny space, which can be invaluable in many of today’s high-tech industrial environments.”
