As Cosford says, pressure likes to equalize, so ambient air pressure tries to move in to fill the space created by the increased volume.
Air is pushed towards the “vacuum” by the pressure of the atmosphere, and not sucked in by some pulling force, as can be seen in the accompanying graphic to the right.
