Diaphragm Valves Feature Turbulance-Free Flow Geometry

June 23, 2010 by

diaphragm valveGF Piping Systems introduced the Type 514-519 High Flow Diaphragm Valve Series, a uniquely designed valve that provides a true break-through for weir style valves. The new valve features an optimized, turbulence-free flow geometry that offers significantly increased flow rate performance and lower energy consumption. These features expand the valve’s suitability for applications where diaphragm valves were previously not considered due to flow restriction.

The valve’s new flow geometry design provides Cv values double the traditional design with values ranging from 3.9 to 116.8, depending on size and end connection. The modified geometry provides linear flow and control characteristics that improve processing stability, resulting in reduced operating costs and more cost-effective media transport. A self-draining feature minimizes dead space and achieves improved hygiene and better resistance to crystallizing fluids.

The innovative valve design also does away with traditional metal bolts required to hold the valve together. Instead, the top-works are threaded directly onto the body, eliminating the need to re-torque the bolts due to thermal expansion. With its metal-free threaded bonnet connection, corrosive build-up is minimized in applications with highly aggressive media.

The Diaphragm Valve Series is available in PVC, CPVC, PP, PVDF, and ABS body materials in sizes 1/2-2″ (with larger sizes available in the 314-319 Series). Diaphragms are available in EPDM, PTFE, FPM and NBR. This material range covers practically the entire spectrum of chemicals with which the diaphragm valves can come into contact, optimizing process compatibility. Standard PVC, CPVC, PP, and ABS versions handle pressures up to 150 PSI while PVDF versions handle pressures up to 240 PSI. End connections include true union, spigot, flanged and zero static. Basic versions of the diaphragm valves are operated manually with a lockable handwheel for protection against unwanted use. An optional self-adjusting electrical feedback unit can be quickly retrofitted, enabling automatic control, piping system regulation and reliable process monitoring.

Additional design features include rounded contours with smooth transitions and radii, which provide less abrasion and noise emission. Color coding on the housing nut and on the housing itself allow easy indication of pressure rating and diaphragm material. A two-color position indicator, which is clearly visible from a distance, shows the actual valve position.

The new valve family can be completely automated with GF Piping Systems’ Pneumatic Actuators DIASTAR 10 (150 PSI) and DIASTAR 16 (240 PSI). Modular design allows easy field installation of the actuator to a manual valve as well as position feedback switches and other accessories.

The new valve series is suitable for extremely contaminated media, media containing solids, and high purity liquids for a variety of applications such as chemical process industry to microelectronics, water treatment, cooling and control.

Assured Automation announced the FireBag – a new line of thermally actuated gas shut-off valves used to control the flow of natural, propane or butane gases.

Many existing emergency gas shut-off devices require manual manipulation – a poor solution in emergency fire situations. The FireBag provides a solution by automatically discontinuing the flow of gas when the ambient temperature reaches 100° C (212° F). With this device, gas is automatically discontinued in fire situations to avert fire escalation and potential gas explosions.

According to the NFPA, the U.S. fire departments face 2,110 home fires a year where natural gas is the first material ignited, and 1,170 home fires a year where LP-gas is involved with the start of a fire. Most home gas fires originate in the kitchen at the stove or gas range.

The FireBag domestic product line includes:

o G4T404 for utility-supplied gas pipes, heating systems with radiant pipes, and hot air generators
o G2T50 for utility-supplied gas meters
o G4T10 for gas boilers and wall heaters
o G2T40 for gas appliances such as stoves ( ranges) and gas radiators
o G4TF for thermal stations

The FireBag industrial product line includes:

o G4T404 for varnishing and paint booths
o TASF for gas motors
o G4TF for commercial ovens

The FireBag has been used throughout the world to provide automatic thermal interruption of gas in paint booth applications, water heaters, stoves and ranges, radiator and gas utilities.

Although US fire codes and certifications for thermally activated shutoff devices currently do not exist, the FireBag conforms to internationally established codes and standards. For example, the European UNI EN 1775 Standard requires all indoor gas pipelines be designed, built and protected to prevent explosions in the case of fire as well as spreading of the fire itself. The FireBag conforms to this standard as well as the European Directive 90/396/CEE, the German Firing System Directive and DVGW TRGI 86/96. It also is certified for the German National Standard DIN 3586.

Compact Pneumatic Valves Offer High Performance

May 26, 2010 by

pneumatic valvesFesto launched a new generation of pneumatic valves which, it claims, offer “a size-to-performance ratio never before achieved by any other valve”.  The VUVG valves are based on a patented cartridge design which achieves extremely high power densities and will allow smaller valves to be used than at present in around 90% of all applications. Alternatively, the valves will operate more dynamically with faster cycle times than conventional valves of a similar size, achieving flow rates up to 100% higher.

The new cartridge design incorporates a unique seal profile that allows vacuum operation, high flow rates and a pressure range of up to 10 bar. The high pressure and the use of smaller cylinders lead to shorter cycle times and more dynamic performance. As a result, when the valves are used, for example, with a 25mm piston diameter cylinder with a 160mm stroke and 350mm tube length, the advancing time at 10 bar is 88% faster than with conventional valves.

pneumatic valves1The cartridge design also supports separated two-pressure operation. There is no overlapping between the air ducts as is common with other valves.

The valves are said to be particularly suitable for use in applications needing cost-effective, compact devices with high flow rates. Their small size, combined with the low weight of their aluminium housings, also makes the valves ideal for uses such as direct mounting on robot arms.

Two 3/2-way valves can be combined in one housing that can operate two single-acting cylinders, thus halving the required installation space.

There is no need for adapters or mounting attachments when installing the valves. Axial mounting bores allow individual valves to be assembled in series without special manifold strips or brackets, creating a valve manifold from a single valve. Multiple pressure zones can be set up easily using separating plates. Integrated LEDs provide a 360° view of the valve status.

The valve’s electronics can be replaced in a one-click operation. The housing remains the same, only the connection is changed. A wide range of variants can be fitted, with connection options that include M8 and stranded wire.
