Rated for 10,000,000 cycles, the compact valve greatly increases system uptime and minimizes maintenance costs. A new formed stainless steel bellows prevents outgassing, virtual leaks and particle entrapment, ensuring easy maintenance and extending the cycle life of the valve.

The High Cycle Valve is available in angle, inline and internal-only configurations, for ease of integration into new tool designs. High flow port sizes, including NW25, NW40 and NW50, use maximum internal diameters for greater conductance. Internal configurations can be used to integrate directly into the product, such as a load lock chamber, reducing the footprint of new tools. The TIG fusion welded vacuum grade body creates fewer entrapment areas, resulting in less contamination build-up.

The High Cycle Valve is available with an air solenoid for electro-pneumatic control of the valve and a limit switch assembly for remote indication in the open or closed position. In the event of power loss, the valve will automatically close. For leak tight operation, elastomer seals are available in Viton® for typical vacuum operating conditions, or Kalrez or Chemraz for higher temperature conditions and increased chemical resistance.

The 24/128 controller utilizes a DeviceNet distributed I/O network, with standard features that include an Allen-Bradley CompactLogix controller with 10″ color touch-screen operator interface.

Easy to follow graphical touch-screens provide total navigational control of the central vacuum system. The setup screen, for example, allows for the naming of loading stations, pumps, purge valves and material sources so you know exactly what is in each hopper and where it is located.

Manifold sharing capabilities allow the 24/128 to reduce the cost for tubing and purge valves and can stage and sequence six vacuum pumps per manifold line. The 24/128 can assign each loading station to any of the pumps connected to the same manifold. When a loader senses demand, the controller triggers the assigned pump to convey. If more than one loader on the manifold needs material simultaneously from different pumps, the controller’s manifold sharing function will then stage the pumps so that they can use the same manifold. The first pump will begin, and when its demand is filled, the next pump will be triggered. The result is a flexible system with minimal tubing and purge valves.

The touchscreen display provides an icon based platform for easy maintenance, operation and troubleshooting. Easy to read diagnostics, operation and installation instructions as well as spare parts information are all available from the touch screen.

PIAB ann0unced the VGS(TM)3040 vacuum gripper system. The VGS(TM) series of products allows users to increase productivity and lower operating costs. The units offer flexible material handling solutions that reduce energy consumption, have faster response times and improve reliability. Ideal for a variety of industries, the VGS(TM)3040 is ideal for applications throughout the production line like high-speed pick-and-place, packaging, palletizing, fixture holding, woodworking handling, glass handling and automobile part and body assembly.

Each system utilizes an integrated COAX® cartridge, designed to position vacuum power precisely where it’s needed, making maximum use of energy and increasing speed by eliminating line losses and inefficiencies. Vacuum flow levels are dependent on the size of the cartridge integrated in the system. Vacuum power levels are determined by the type of cartridge used, as there are three types to fit most applications.

The VGS(TM) series can be utilized in each step of the manufacturing process to improve efficiency. With advantages such as excellent pick-up and system speed, energy efficiency, high degree of safety, easy dimensioning and reduced risk for leakage, the VGS(TM)3040 offers even more benefits. The combination Vacustat and AQR 02 (atmospheric quick release) can save up to 99% air consumption in a non-porous application. An integrated blow-off check valve makes it possible to get a very reliable positive pressure blow-off system, even in large decentralized vacuum systems. The AQR 02 is the world’s fastest automatic quick release function for a decentralized vacuum ejector pump. Fast release is quite important as quick vacuum response is needed in high speed applications.

An innovative application for pneumatics helps power a unique vehicle. The Hydrogen Hybrid Bus (HHB), was built by Golden, CO-based Proterra with funding from the U.S. Federal Transit Administration (FTA) as part of the National Fuel Cell Bus Program, and is managed by the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE).

The HHB is operating on existing bus routes through the Victoria, BC adding hilly, cold weather operations to the ongoing evaluation of the bus. The bus received significant positive exposure by operating throughout the Winter Olympic Games and was featured as part of a formal demonstration and media event on March 11, sponsored by the Southern Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Coalition (SHFCC).

The bus is powered by lithium titanate batteries and two 16 kw hydrogen fuel cells, producing clean electric power in a lighter, quieter, and more aerodynamic design that is better suited for today’s transportation demands. The only emission is water vapor. Although the bus was certified for use in the U.S., it successfully underwent additional testing and safety inspections in order to be driven in Canada. With more than twice the energy efficiency of other hybrid buses and four times that of conventional diesel buses, Proterra buses combine tremendous environmental benefits with substantial cost savings to the operator.

Hydrogen Hybrid Bus Details:

The HHB is an electric hybrid bus that was purpose built for an electric drive train and can be configured with a wide variety of ‘engines’ or as battery electric only. This version uses clean fuel cells as the ‘engine’.

The HHB carries 29 kilograms of hydrogen on board and can achieve up to a 480 km range.

The use of composite materials for the body makes it much lighter – and stronger – than conventional buses.

Initial BC Transit evaluation has determined that the fuel economy for this bus in shadow service is approximately 70% better than typical diesel buses.

South Carolina and the University of South Carolina were selected as the primary site for the bus demonstration and evaluation because of their prominence in fuel cell and hydrogen research.

The HHB meets Buy America Requirements while utilizing fuel cells provided by Hydrogenics (headquartered in Mississauga, Canada) representing a great US/Canadian partnership for technology development and job creation.

The Hydrogen Hybrid Bus was deployed in August 2009 and is engaged in a two-year demonstration and evaluation project to prove the feasibility of advanced hydrogen-fuel-cell technology applications for mass transit. The demonstration and evaluation project will be conducted in three cities; Columbia, SC, Austin, TX, and Victoria, B.C. Upon completion of the BC Transit demonstration, the bus will return to Columbia to continue its evaluation as part of the University of South Carolina shuttle fleet.
