Dual-sensor, Split-connector Cuts Cylinder Costs

Three areas where you can look to cut costs on pneumatic cylinder applications include installation time, cables, and the sensors used for detecting the piston’s position. For example, first consider the sensor in a standard cylinder. Most standard cylinders use proximity switches, either internal or external to the aluminum housing that detect special targets or magnets mounted on the piston. Unfortunately, these proximity switches can be relatively expensive, take up valuable space, and are difficult and time-consuming to install.

DualSensor-MIB.jpg
A dual-sensor, split-connector system coupled to a multiple-interface block (MIB) in a high-density application reduces the number of wires and potentially doubles the number of cylinder switches that can be used in the same installation.

A better solution is designed around a new dual sensor with a split connector. The configuration has two low-profile, magnetic-field sensors molded together into a single, four-pole connector. Compared to the standard application (where the end of the piston’s stroke is detected in both directions), the dual sensor system does the same job with one less connecting cable, fewer terminations, and less connective hardware, which require less time to install. This dual sensor arrangement can cut an application’s cost by 50%.

Dual-Sensor-2.jpg
Even in a smaller application, a dual-sensor, split-connector system installed on a cylinder to detect the end of a piston’s stroke can reduce installation time and material costs compared to a standard two-proximity switch arrangement.

Dual-Sensor-on-cylinder.jpg
A dual-sensor, split-connector system combines two magnetic-field sensors with a single connector. This approach uses only one four-conductor cable and less installation hardware with fewer terminations than the standard method.

In another installation where numerous cylinder switches are densely packed, multiple interface blocks (MIBs) are typically used to reduce the number of wires needed to return to the control panel. However, you get a bonus when you use a dual sensor system in the same installation: It doubles the number of cylinder switches that can be connected to the same MIB, or it cuts the MIB size in half for the same number of switches. Either way, your cost-cutting goal is realized.

Self-adjusting Cushioning for Pneumatic Cylinders

May 26, 2010 by kremington
Filed under Cylinders, Equipment, Industry News

No more need for toing and froing when you are adjusting the cushioning of pneumatic cylinders. Festo’s self-adjusting cushioning PPS makes commissioning easier and also saves time. It makes it possible to achieve a dynamic but gentle cushioning action into the end positions of cylinders without the need for manual intervention.

Until now, users always needed to adjust the end-position cushioning integrated into cylinders manually, with the risk of slow cycle times or excessive noise generation. Manual adjustment of end-position cushioning also takes time; this makes commissioning a very long drawn-out process in the case of installations with a lot of drives requiring cushioning.

Without any need for manual interventions, self-adjusting cushioning PPS from Festo now ensures an optimum cushioning action every time, even if parameters such as friction and pressure change. It also reduces the acceleration forces acting on components and workpieces. This cuts down wear and minimises time-consuming vibration. What is more, in comparison with shock absorbers, self-adjusting cushioning is less expensive and more robust. This unique cushioning, not offered by any other supplier, is now available with the Festo round cylinder DSNU, of which millions of examples have already been sold.

With Festo’s self-adjusting cushioning PPS for round cylinders DSNU, longitudinal slots on the inside of the cylinder discharge exhaust air in a controlled way, thus making it possible to achieve dynamic but gentle cushioning action into the end positions without the need for manual intervention. (Photo: Festo)

The DSNU-PPS variant with self-adjusting cushioning described above is not the only member of the DSNU range to offer impressive performance. In addition to the basic, standardised version, DSNU is available with four different mounting options, created by combinations of a total of three different bearing caps and four end caps. This include end caps of block design for direct mounting or with flange threads, end caps with threaded lugs and swivel bearings, with air supply connections that are lateral or in-line with the cylinder axis. The advantages for customers are: no need for costly special solutions, more flexibility during system design and less work when ordering. To ensure that ordering remains transparent and simple, the wide variety of available piston diameters, stroke lengths, functions and variants can be selected with just a single order code. Further variants are available with a through piston rod, heat-resistant seals and clamping units.

The DSNU covers all the applications within the ISO 6432 standard but also goes well beyond this. It will appeal to all users who place the most stringent requirements on round cylinders with regard to quality, a wide choice of variants, availability and price/performance ratio. The well-known long service life of Festo cylinders helps ensure system availability and thus guarantee maximum productivity.

DUAL SENSOR FOR C-GROOVE CYLINDERS

BIM-UNR Dual Sensor

BIM-UNR Dual Sensor (High-Res)

TURCK’s BIM-UNR line of compact magnetic cylinder position sensors now includes a dual sensor designed for detecting short and long stroke C-groove cylinders. BIM-UNR dual sensors provide a distinct advantage by combining two sensors through one cable connection to speed installation, as well as lessen wire costs and connection points. This design makes the sensor particularly beneficial in areas where multiple cylinders are used, as it only requires a single cable. With dimensions of 2.9 x 4.6 x 18 mm,

Delivering reliable performance and high EMC immunity, thisl sensor provides an exceptional alternative to ordinary cylinder position sensors. The sensor mounts within C-groove cylinders with no accessories required. Plus, it can be inserted into a C-groove from the top rather than from the side, further simplifying installation. On the sensor’s side is a built-in tab that keeps the sensor in place to facilitate one-handed mounting. As the mounting screw is located near the cable exit, the sensor remains fastened even if the cable is pulled.

Filed under Actuators, Cylinders, Equipment, Valves

GF Piping Systems has announced expansion of its large diameter size range for the Type 567 Butterfly Valve to include sizes 14-16″. The new size range features a unique double eccentric off-center design and excellent chemical compatibility. Suitable applications include landfills where large size valves are required for drainage of underground leachate. Other applications include industrial water treatment, potable water treatment, swimming pools, water parks and waste water systems in such industries as chemical, chemical distribution, electroplating and power plants.

The 567 Valve’s unique double eccentric design features an off-center shaft that allows the disc to completely disengage from the disc seal, even when partially open. This results in reduced seal friction for longer service life and minimal maintenance compared to non-eccentric valve styles. The double eccentric design requires only about half the torque of a traditional boot design, which decreases wear on the disc seal to further enhance product life. Other advantages of this design include easier manual operation, compatibility with smaller actuators for reduced installation cost, and better protection against pressure surges.

The new large size valve features industry-standard ISO flange mount for easy electric or pneumatic actuation with most actuators. Other features include bi-directional capability, pressure rating of 90 psi at 70°F, and hand wheel. The valve is available with either EPDM or FPM seals, 304 or 316 Stainless Steel stem, and a Polypropylene body.
